Who holds ultimate authority over a nation? Can political power ever place a leader or government beyond accountability? And have we truly learned the lessons of history?

In A Spiritual Warning: God Does Not Tolerate Injustice, Gerrie Alberts explores these questions through the timeless principles of the Bible and the lessons of history. The central message is clear: human authority is temporary, but the responsibility to act with justice, honesty, humility and mercy never disappears.

Beginning with Scripture, the article examines God's authority, His call for obedience and His clear concern for justice. Passages from Matthew, Daniel, Micah, Isaiah, Amos and Proverbs remind readers that leadership is not a licence to dominate, discriminate, deceive or enrich oneself. Those entrusted with authority are accountable for how they treat others.

The article then considers biblical rulers whose actions brought serious consequences: Saul, Ahab, Jeroboam, Belshazzar, Zedekiah, Herod Agrippa and Nebuchadnezzar. Their stories offer enduring lessons about pride, disobedience, abuse of power, humility and the possibility of restoration.

The warning is not confined to ancient history. The experiences of Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Nicolae Ceau?escu, Idi Amin, Ferdinand Marcos and Robert Mugabe illustrate how modern political power can collapse and how repression, persecution and the denial of human dignity can leave deep scars on nations. These historical examples are presented as warnings about the fragility of power, not as claims that we can know the divine purpose behind every event.

The discussion then turns to South Africa.

No honest reflection on justice in our country can leave Apartheid out of the picture. Its racial discrimination and denial of equal political rights must be acknowledged. But the injustices of the past cannot justify new injustices in the present. The end of Apartheid and the democratic transition of 1994 created an opportunity to build a society founded on dignity, equality before the law and fairness for all.

Have we fulfilled that promise? The article invites readers to consider the responsibilities of the present government, the purpose and effects of economic empowerment, the dangers of political entitlement, and the need for honest accountability. It asks whether policies and practices are bringing South Africans together or deepening division.

This is not a defence of Apartheid, nor is it a call to hostility towards any political party or group. It is an appeal to apply the same moral standard to every government and every person entrusted with authority. Historical grievances must be faced honestly, but they must never become an excuse for corruption, discrimination or the abuse of power today.

At its heart, this is a spiritual appeal to leaders and citizens alike: examine your conduct, acknowledge wrongdoing, seek justice, show mercy and walk humbly before God. Repentance is not weakness; it can be the beginning of restoration.

A nation needs more than political change. It needs moral courage, responsible leadership and a renewed commitment to truth and justice.

No government is too powerful to be accountable. No nation is beyond repentance.

And no person is beyond the reach of God's justice and mercy.

An invitation to reflect on God's authority, the lessons of history and the future we are building together.

A Spiritual Warning
