BELLA

The night my father died on our driveway, he gave me one name.

Cassian.

Four days later, the man who answers to it carries me out of the funeral over his shoulder, locks me in the back of his car, and drives me up a mountain to a house full of guns.

He says he's keeping a promise to a dead man. He says nobody touches me as long as he's alive.

He doesn't say who my father really was. He doesn't say what's hidden under the floor.

And he never says why he looks at me like I'm the one thing in that house he isn't allowed to have.

I should hate him. I should run.

Instead I'm learning how far a girl can fall when the devil is the only one who catches her.

CASSIAN

My boss had one rule.

Never go near his daughter.

I kept it for seventeen years. I kept it every time he pulled her picture out of his wallet. I kept it right up until the night we buried him and I had to bring her home.

Now she sleeps in his room. She sits in my chair. She points my own gun at my chest and demands the truth, and she's the only person alive who isn't afraid of me.

Everyone I've ever loved is in the ground.

So I'll keep her safe. I'll keep her alive.

I just can't ever let her find out she's already mine.
