Two of the four main characters in the story are 18-year old Jewish boys from the town of Belmonte, Portugal, for centuries an epicenter of luso/jewish culture. Belmonte was also the birthplace and home of Pedro Álvares Cabral, the discoverer of Brazil and the maritime route to India. Davide Oliveira is the son of a long line of rabbis in the Belmonte area. Through Davides father, Rabbi Elias, the forbidden teachings of the Zohar are introduced to Davide and his best friend, Ruy Gonalves. Ruy is the son and grandson of Pedro Cabrals personal physicians and financial advisors. From the time of Cabral, a secret Jewish, multi-national investment fund had been established to take advantage of overseas discoveries and commodity market capture. Daniel Almeyda, in his early 20s, is the son of the captain of a merchant ship out of the Portuguese enclave of Ceuta on the Moroccan coast. Daniel;s father, Ahmad, is Muslim and his mother, Bela is Jewish and the daughter of the Jewish founder of the shipping company. Daniels father and mother, with crew and boat, are hijacked by pirates under contract with the Inquisition.. Ahmad and Bela as well as the crew are thrown overboard. When Daniel discovers this, he vows vengeance and tracks one of the pirate captains to the Spanish port of Sanlucar de Barrameda. Juancinto Taranto is a 40-year old Gypsy from Seville, who was sentenced to 10-years servitude in Colombia and Paraguay for killing a man who was molesting his wife, Solea, as she danced flamenco to his guitar. Juancinto returns from there New World after 10 years to learn that Solea has committed suicide, believing the rumor that Juancinto had died in a shipwreck off the coast of Brazil. Soless mother, La Gitanilla, a fortune-teller, stops Juancinto from ending his life and convinced him that his ultimate fate is in the New World. He leaves for Sanlucar de Barrameda to seek his destiny. By 1565, after 50 years, the secret overseas trading company started by Pedro Cabral has flourished and is now established in Lisbon, Seville, Amsterdam, Rio, and Goa, India, Success attracts the Inquisition. Many Jewish investors in Portugal, Spain and India also participate in the secret study of the Zohar. The Inquisition bears down on Goa and, through torture, uncovers the treasonous international nature of the trading firm, and its forbidden study groups. A long list of names is compiled and those in Goa are burned at the stake. This news takes 5 months to reach Lisbon, at which time the fathers of Davide and Ruy realize that they are dead men and make efforts to save their sons, also on the list. Ruy and Davide are now students at the University in Coimbra. The boys must abandon their studies and love affairs and make their way to Sanlucar de Barrameda and the New World. Ruy , Davide, Daniel and Juancinto converge and meet in Sanlucar. Daniels family ship is discovered at the dock in Sanlucar, as well as the captain who stole it. Plans are made to lure the pirate captain into the nearby swamp called Doñada and there, dispense Justice. This done, they all sign on as crew on the armada to La Florida and soon find themselves in the Spanish army, under the command of Capt. Juan Pardo, occupying the Catawban town of Joara, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The book Joara is the sequel to Belmonte.
...9798989552214_John Harris Bradleylibro_electonico_9798989552214_9798989552214John HarrisInglésMéxico2024-09-27T00:00:00+00:00https://getbook.kobo.com/koboid-prod-public/ingram30-epub-7481c887-4d14-4c8e-9f76-4d31182739dd.epub2024-09-27T00:00:00+00:00John Harris Bradley
