Written by hand in 2000 by Professor Vijay Kumar Aggarwal, Books, Our Greatest Companions is a heartfelt essay on the many ways books shape our lives.

From the fairy tales parents read at bedtime to history, religion, literature, science and everyday living, he reflects on how reading builds wisdom, character and understanding. He writes about the great authors and characters who stay with us for a lifetime, the comfort a good book offers when we are alone, the role of libraries in building an aware society, and why reading good books is a habit worth cultivating at every age.

Professor Aggarwal served as Professor and Head of the Department of Applied Sciences at Pandit Jagat Ram Government Polytechnic College, Hoshiarpur. Remembered for his kindness, humility and respect for everyone he met, he passed away in October 2026.

This edition is published in his loving memory. It presents his essay, lightly edited for grammar and spelling, along with photographs of his original handwritten pages.
