What if the human body were a small copy of the sky, and a fever the same event as a storm, only smaller? Hildegard of Bingen's Causes and Cures sets out to show exactly that, and it does so with an imagination that still startles: the world is built first, element by element, light and winds and waters, before the book ever turns to a patient.

From the creation and the fall of Lucifer the treatise moves into the human frame — blood, seed, the womb, the four humours and the gallery of temperaments they produce, from madness and despair to gout and grief, from sleep and dreams to the eyes and the organs. Then come the remedies: simples and compounds, plasters, potions and baths, with a long section on women's medicine and a set of veterinary recipes at the end. It closes as a manual of prognosis, teaching the reader to read the signs of life and death in a sick man's eyes, voice, pulse and urine, followed by a lunarium of thirty moons.

What this edition gives you is the translation itself: a literary rendering made to be read today, natural and alive in the language of its reader, faithful to the substance, the voice, the tone and the images of the author. A critical introduction opens the volume, placed before Hildegard's text, and walks you through the book's architecture, its five parts and the world they belong to.

Add it to your library, and let a twelfth-century abbess show you a universe held in a pulse and a cloud in a glass.
