At the end of a preaching ministry that extended over more than six decades, Elias Aslaksen returned once more to truths that had shaped his life and teaching.

Elias Aslaksen's Last Messages contains transcriptions of sermons delivered during the final months of his life. For that reason, the book differs from a systematically constructed theological treatise. The texts retain the immediacy of spoken preaching: direct, personal, and aimed at bringing the listener to a concrete response to the Word of God.

Themes such as humility, self-judgment, obedience, grace, faithfulness, and living before God recur throughout the messages. Aslaksen focuses less on theoretical knowledge than on the inward condition of a person. How should a Christian respond to personal weakness? What does it mean to take God's Word seriously? And what enables a person to remain faithful and continue developing spiritually?

'I wish the very best for each and every one of you! For several years I have used the expression, 'a glorious meeting,' 'a good meeting.' But what is a good meeting? What is the most glorious thing about it all? That is that it's true, and if it isn't, then it's deceit, hypocrisy, humbug, lies, play-acting, falsehood, and artificiality. I have given a lot of good advice, and blessed is everyone who can manage to follow it with joy.'

The historical setting gives the collection a particular significance. These are messages from an experienced preacher looking back on a long life of ministry while continuing to emphasize the convictions he considered essential.

The book therefore offers both Christian preaching and a direct window into the final period of Elias Aslaksen's life and ministry.
