The First-Time Dad's Fourth Trimester Guide

Support Your Partner. Care for Your Newborn. Feel Ready.

You don't have to know everything to be a great first-time dad. You just have to show up.

Bringing a newborn home is wonderful, exhausting, confusing, and rarely what you pictured. Your partner is healing. Your baby arrived with no instruction manual. Everyone has an opinion, and most of it contradicts the last one. And somehow you're supposed to know what to do next.

The First-Time Dad's Fourth Trimester Guide gives new fathers calm, practical help for the first weeks and months at home, without lecturing or pretending there's one right way to parent. It's for the dad who wants to help and isn't sure where to begin.

Marie O'Shea is a postpartum care specialist and mother of three, twins included. After fifteen years working inside family homes with exhausted new parents, she knows what helps. She shows dads what matters in the fourth trimester: growing confident with the baby, supporting Mom's recovery, sharing the mental load, protecting sleep, spotting real trouble, and working as a team when nobody has slept.

Inside, You'll Learn How To:

Support your partner after birth without hovering, taking over, or waiting for instructions
Understand postpartum recovery, including what's normal, when to call the doctor, and what needs urgent care
Recognize postpartum depression, anxiety, intrusive thoughts, birth trauma, and postpartum psychosis, and know when to get professional help
Read your newborn's cues for hunger, tiredness, overstimulation, discomfort, and sleep
Handle everyday baby care with confidence, from diapers and burping to soothing, bottle feeding, safe sleep, and nighttime care
Share feeding duties whether your family is breastfeeding, pumping, using formula, or combining them
Get through nights without keeping score, with a realistic plan that protects both of you from dangerous exhaustion
Carry the mental load without being asked, so Mom isn't managing the baby and managing you
Protect your relationship in a season when two loving people can run out of patience fast
Take Dad's mental health seriously, including depression, anxiety, anger, overwhelm, and burnout
Build a flexible family routine without forcing a newborn onto a schedule that doesn't fit
Know when your family needs more help, and how to ask before everyone is running on empty

Plus: The First-Time Dad's Toolkit
nYou'll also find practical quick-reference pages for the first 24 hours at home, feeding support, baby cues, night shifts, safe sleep, visitor boundaries, urgent warning signs, key phone numbers, partner check-ins, and more. Each one is built to be found fast, even one-handed at 3 a.m.

This isn't a book about becoming a perfect father.

It's about becoming the dad who notices.

The dad who learns his baby instead of stepping back because Mom seems more experienced.

The dad who can say, 'I've got her. Go rest.'

The dad who knows confidence comes after participation, not before.

Warm, practical, and occasionally funny, this guide stays true to what postpartum life really looks like. It will help you feel less like the guy standing in the doorway wondering what his job is, and more like the person your baby already needs you to be:

Her dad.
