The Christian life is not meant to remain at its beginning. In Four Stages in the Life of a Believer, Aksel Smith presents the life of faith as a process of development in which God seeks to lead a person forward step by step.

The four stages give the book its distinctive structure. They provide a framework for understanding different experiences and phases in a believer's life and emphasize that spiritual maturity does not automatically accompany the first experience of faith. Knowledge, obedience, testing, and the work of God lead a person onward, bringing both new possibilities and new responsibility.

Smith's presentation is not intended as a rigid psychological or theological formula. The central question is practical: How can a person continue to grow in faith and move from an initial experience with God toward greater spiritual maturity?

Smith writes: 'While the body walks through life's external circumstances, the soul journeys on an inner, invisible way with God. God, in His fervency, is zealous to lead us forward on the ways of the inner life, and willing souls are led forward with amazing speed. Each step forward is a step of faith impelled by God's grace.'

The history of the book adds another distinctive element. Aksel Smith died in 1919 at the age of only 38. His brother Johan O. Smith later discovered the completed manuscript among his papers, and it was published posthumously in 1920 by Hidden Treasures Publishers.

Four Stages in the Life of a Believer is therefore both a book about spiritual development, and also a practical invitation to understand the life of faith not as something static, but as a continuing path of growth.
