SCARLETT

I photograph other people's happy endings for a living. Then I hand them the pictures and walk home alone through the snow.

Three years ago I came to Saint Petersburg chasing an old photograph of a church nobody can find, with a stranger standing in its doorway.

Then I walked into a club full of candlelight and beautiful people who never seem to breathe, and a man in the dark looked at me like I was the only thing in the room.

He is the man from the photograph. And the photograph is a hundred years old.

He is cold to the touch. He never blinks. When he kisses me, something in my chest snaps like a bone, and I nearly freeze to death in his arms.

He says I can walk away whenever I want.

He doesn't tell me what it will cost him if I do.

ALEKSANDR

My heart stopped beating five hundred years ago.

It started again the night she laughed.

I am a prince among monsters, and I keep a worse one chained inside me. For two hundred years I have not fed from a living throat, because I know that if I start, I will not stop.

Then her blood hit the air, and every dark thing in the world turned its head.

They want her. They have been waiting for her longer than I have been alive.

They will have to come through me.

I would burn this city to the ground before I let anyone take what is mine.
