This audiobook is narrated by a digital voice.

When someone asks what you want, you say “nothing, I’m good” before you’ve thought, then draw a blank, because the answer you’ve practiced most always speaks first.

Discover why that first answer comes so fast and why your own has faded. Harvard and Virginia researchers found people at every age expect to change far less in the next decade than they did in the last, a pattern called the end of history illusion, so the person you are now feels finished. Missouri studies found that people who reach their true self quickly say their lives feel more meaningful. You leave with one question to ask the moment your rehearsed answer speaks first, to help you reach the answer underneath.

The book follows Owen, a vice principal fluent in his work voice, through a blank page, a river walk, and a birthday dinner, showing where the blank comes from. It’s a calm, warm look at feeling like a stranger to your own wants, for anyone who’s great at being reliable and goes quiet when asked. It takes under half an hour and builds to one small first step.

Listen now and find out whether the blank you drew the last time someone asked was an empty space, or something trying to get through.
