Zephyr Zhu has spent ten years writing a game engine, and he runs a small game platform that almost nobody plays. He doesn't say much, and he never admits he's wrong. He can handle any bug he has ever written. His ten-year-old daughter, Plumie, is another matter.

On an ordinary weekend night, Plumie vanishes from home. The doors and windows are untouched, and the cameras never show her leaving. On her pillow lies a single feather, and it fades away before he can touch it. That same night, someone quietly leaves a trace on his game platform.

He follows it into a world he never imagined. Over tens of thousands of years, humanity's emotions have each grown a mind of their own and become gods. The one who took Plumie is the hardest of them all to reach: Dread.

To bring his daughter home, he has to play by the gods' rules. Mischievous Curiosity hands him one puzzle after another. Serenity, who never lets anything show, sits down at the same card table. And the deeper he goes into Dread's domain, the more everything in him wants to turn back.

Why did the gods choose his daughter, of all people? And how long have they been watching him?

A stubborn programmer father, a tiny platform nobody plays, and a pantheon of gods who watched humanity grow up. The search has only just begun.
