What happens when unhealed wounds are given power — and a theological language to justify them? This is the central question driving Inheritance of Ishmael, a work that approaches Islam not through the lens of political analysis or doctrinal polemic, but through the combined optics of Jungian depth psychology and hesychast theology.

The book traces a single, sustained argument: that the structural features of Islam — its imageless God, its master-slave relational model, its systematic absence of contemplative silence, its eschatology of compensation rather than communion — are not theological accidents. They are the legible imprints of one man's unhealed psychic wounds pressed into a system that then declared itself the final word of God.

Muhammad's early losses are read with clinical precision: the pre-natal absence of a father, a wet-nurse who feared the child she nursed, a mother who died on a return journey before the boy could understand why. These three foundational ruptures — the loss of safety, of unconditional acceptance, and of a father's name — become the interpretive key to five Evagrian passions (logismoi) that organize the Medinan period: kenodoxia, orgé, philargyria, porneia, and hyperephania. Each passion is shown not merely as a moral failure but as a wound that received theological authorization rather than healing.

The book gives particular attention to what Islam structurally excludes: the maternal face of God, briefly glimpsed in the episode of the Satanic Verses and then permanently sealed; the hesychast tradition of transformative silence, which sufism approached and orthodoxy consistently suppressed; and the descending movement of kenosis — the God who enters darkness rather than commanding from above — without which no system can accompany the human soul into its deepest layers.

Yet the book refuses to end in diagnosis. Its final section lifts the entire argument into an apocalyptic register, asking the question that historical analysis cannot reach: what if God knew? What if the Ishmaelite trajectory — painful, circuitous, structurally closed — is nonetheless a stage in a longer story, as Abraham's detour through Ishmael was a stage in his own ripening toward Moriah? The Lamb who opens the sealed book speaks to Muhammad's community the way he spoke to the seven churches: knowing their works, naming their wounds, and keeping the gates of the Heavenly City permanently open.

The book closes where it began — at Beer Lahai Roi, the well of the Living One who sees. The place where God named an unborn child to a nameless slave woman. Before any system. Before any law. Before any book. He saw her. That was enough. It still is.
