You know those moments right after you open your eyes and come out of dreamland. Usually, I just lay there in bed for a few minutes, but not today, my phone was about to buzz off the table. I picked it up.
Unknown number.
Who could be calling this early?
I answered it, afraid it was bad news.
Hello? I said.
Hello, said a polished mans voice. Is this Jacob Tarver?
Yeah.
Good morning, Jacob. This is Art Johnson from Channel 8 News. Im calling to inform you that you just won our grand prize summer vacation extravaganza giveaway.
Really?
Really, Art said. You entered the contest back in July and now youre the lucky winner of a trip to the Amazon.
Wow! I said. Ive never won anything like this before.
I sat up in bed. I grabbed the TV remote and turned it to Channel 8 News. I saw Art on the TV screen, along with my name as the big winner. It was true!
So how do you feel, Jacob?
I heard Arts voice in my phone, then a second later I heard it on the TV.
Great, I said. Amazing. This is awesome. Thank you. Thank you so much!
One month later
The vacation I won had several packages to choose from, a spa package, an eco-tour package, and a fishing expedition. I chose the fishing expedition because it would put me on the Amazon River in a kayak and I thought that was the coolest thing in the world.
Once I arrived I was set up with a guide named Marco. He was short with shaggy black hair and a skinny build. He had two kayaks set up with everything youd ever need to go fishing, plus he had a cooler on the back of each one filled with sodas and snacks.
I was standing on the dock as he showed me a map of all the places we would check out today. Wed be paddling quite a bit.
I stepped into my kayak and sat down quickly to keep from getting off-balance. Marco did the same and off we went, paddling down the river. The water was dark, murky, and slick as glass. Overhead, all sorts of tropical birds flew across the river, squawking loudly. The jungle on either side of us made lots of noise between the bugs and monkeys and other creatures, but that was like background noise, and overall the place had a quiet stillness. There were no planes flying overhead, and no traffic could be heard, and no cell phone service. The resort was miles away, and even it felt remote. I felt like I was a very long way from civilization, and that didnt seem like a bad thing at all.
Look, Marco pointed at some rippling water.
I cast beyond it and started reeling. A hard strike nearly jerked the rod and reel out of my hands. I yanked back, reeling in line.
Marco, I got something! I yelled.
I kept reeling and I pulled out a big fish head, the body was picked clean, just white bone from the gills back. I gave Marco a puzzled look.
He smiled. Piranha.
I tossed the fish head back and paddled on. Marco pointed out a rock jutting out of the water. I cast toward it, let my lure settle, then slowly reeled it back. I was trying a new approach and it worked. Something fought hard against my line. I reeled against it and in no time I brought my catch into the kayak, a brightly colored Peacock Bass.
Marco gave me a thumbs up. I took a pic and tossed my catch back into the murky river.
For the next hour, Marco pointed out spots, Id cast to them, and nine times out of ten I would catch a fish. Seriously. It was crazy. I had never caught so many, and I was hooked. I didnt just want to catch more, I wanted to catch a big one.
Marco, I said. I want to catch a really big one. I put my rod and reel down and spread my arms.
Marco nodded and waved a hand for me to follow.
We paddled for what seemed like miles. My arms were getting tired when Marco finally stopped at a Y where the river branched off.
9781005392161_CJ Blake91436160-ca59-3d02-ad3c-a5f1ca40a0cd_9781005392161;9781005392161_9781005392161CJ BlakeInglésMéxicohttps://getbook.kobo.com/koboid-prod-public/smashwords_level45-epub-923b292a-06b6-496d-85f3-43f4cd8a0850.epub2021-12-06T00:00:00+00:00CJ Blake
