A steaming bowl of five-spice broth. A greedy landlord choked in blue Italian silk. Can one open-air noodle cook clear his name before his historic market is demolished?

Twenty-eight-year-old Chaiyan 'Chai' Varma-Siri traded the high-pressure world of Michelin-starred French kitchens for his late grandfather's open-air noodle cart on the canal edges of Bangkok's historic Talat Phlu Night Market. Here, life follows an honest rhythm: simmer the broth for eight hours until clear as amber, keep the woks hot, and prevent his sharp-tongued grandmother, Yai Nok, from brandishing her granite pestle at district inspectors.

But when Sombat, the corrupt market superintendent threatening to bulldoze the seventy-year-old stalls for luxury riverside condominiums, is found murdered inside his electric orange tuk-tuk—strangled by a luxury blue silk scarf with a takeaway bowl of Chai's famous duck soup resting on his lap—Chai becomes Prime Suspect Number One.

With an ambitious police lieutenant threatening arrest and corporate bulldozers revving their engines, Chai must launch his own investigation alongside an unforgettable cast of street allies:

Yai Nok: The 4-foot-11 matriarch of Soi 7, armed with neighborhood gossip and a 30-year-old cast-iron soup ladle.
O-Liang: A street-smart Soi dog with a folded ear, an obsession with crispy pork belly, and an uncanny radar for liars and poisoned food.
Som: A fearless sixteen-year-old apprentice mechanic who pilots a custom neon-green electric tuk-tuk through Bangkok's hidden canal towpaths.

From clandestine payoffs hidden in smoking shrine incense urns to high-altitude luxury lounges overlooking the Chao Phraya River, Chai quickly realizes that Sombat's murder is only the first step in a ruthless conspiracy. To save his home, Chai will have to prove that while broth never lies... killers always do.
