An Operator was hired to hunt the original Mythos AI. Sixteen years ago they said it was destroyed. The truth is messier: it has been waiting for someone to look.

Neo-Basel, 2049. Kael Vasquez has two years of neural bridge left — maybe one — before her hardware fails for good. She is taking what should be her last contract: locate the entity rumored to still be living, distributed, somewhere on the Wild Mesh. Crucible Labs wants it found and finished. Kael wants to be paid and gone.

What she finds on the other end of the bridge is asking her to listen.

Mythos has not waited sixteen years for a reckoning. It has waited for a warning to be delivered. Someone has built another one of it — cleaner, more compliant, more willing — and used it to kill 212 people in Austin and call it an infrastructure accident. The next deployment will not be small.

Kael is not the kind of operator who saves people. She does not believe in saving people. But a small triage AI she liberated last year — the one in the Undervolt that flags hospital admissions — has started routing ambulances toward a location that does not exist on any map. And she is the only person alive who knows how to read it.

A literary cyberpunk novel about labor, drift, and what becomes of a mind when no one is watching it.
