Novella. Rule Number One: No skating on Tamarack Lake ice. Rule Number Two: Don't touch the nanny. Rule Number Two wasn't on the fridge. It should have been.

Torin Lindqvist captains the Montana Nightjars. He blocks hundred-mile-an-hour slap shots without flinching and has gone through four nannies since September. His six-year-old daughter Pip is Deaf, brilliant, and an expert at hiding in hockey bags. All Torin wants is someone who will follow the laminated list on his fridge and stay out of his way.

Wren Halloway needs this job. The ex-figure skater signs fluently, owes more in medical bills than her car is worth, and has never met a rule she couldn't negotiate. Within a week she's taped sticky-note amendments to his list, talked him into building a backyard rink, and gotten Pip skating for the first time.

She's also caught the captain smiling. Twice.

Torin can't stop watching her laugh, and Wren can't stop wondering what it would take to get past The Wall. A snowed-in road trip, a kiss in the dark of the Roost, and one reckless night later, the house on Ponderosa Point Road finally feels like home.

Then Torin's ex-wife comes back with a custody petition, a tabloid photo and a deal that forces him to choose. Wren is about to learn what he chooses, with a secret of her own in her pocket.
