Darcy has a middling retail job, a failing set of kidneys, and a dialysis appointment set for Tuesday. She spends her last minutes on Earth at a bus stop, wishing she had a cause to dedicate herself to. Something worth fighting for. Then a squatted truck brings all such wishes to an end...or so she thinks.

She wakes in a healer's cottage, hungry, clear-headed, and cured of her kidney failure thanks to a faun healer who treats the miracle as routine. The villagers outside are waiting for a hero to deal with the beast at the river, and they've decided Darcy is it.

She doesn't have a weapon, and she hasn't ridden a horse in years. What she has is eight years of calming people who are about to scream at her, and the instinct to ask what's actually wrong. What she finds at the ford is not what anyone expected.

The people say the guild says kills monsters. The ledger of the man who died slipping a bridle onto the kelpie causing trouble says otherwise.

Darcy wanted a cause. She just didn't think it'd be figuring out what's going on with these fantasy creatures.
