Three weeks into a new precinct, Officer Lena Vargas is still the transfer whose last partner left in an ambulance. She keeps her head down, follows protocol, and does not need a babysitter.

Marcus Hale has made the opposite choice. He works alone, and everyone in the squad knows better than to argue. When Captain Ruiz pairs them for the night shift anyway, Hale says no. Vargas says she doesn’t need him either. Ruiz doesn’t care.

Their first call blows the siren fuse. Their second ends with two scared kids and a complaint Vargas starts writing in the cruiser. By the time a domestic call and a shots-fired scene force them to cover each other, the distance between the seats is no longer just professional.

Then a fight at Fulton Yards turns into a trap. The people waiting in the dark know their unit number, their precinct, and their shifts. Someone inside the department is feeding them information, and the only officer Vargas can count on is the partner who never wanted her there.

In the hours after dark, protocol will not keep them alive. The question is whether the man who jumps first will stay, and whether the woman writing the complaint is willing to put the notebook down.
