Miners pour in, most are Chines. One, Fou Yei, a young Eurasian girl, attracts the attention of brothel owner Miss Kate who buys her bond and puts her to work.</p><p>George Colley is her first client, is fascinated by her. He buys her bond, disguises her as a boy and takes her to The Palmer. The couple develop an uneasy relationship.</p><p>On a visit to town, they see Ginger, a huge miner, brutalise Tommy Tse, a successful trader and tong representative. They intervene, a riot develops, George is knocked unconscious and Fou Yei disappears. His search for her forces George to confront his love for the girl.</p><p>Fou Yei is spirited away with the injured Tommy to a Joss House. Tommy is badly injured and Fou Yei sends her countrymen to find George to help. His bush skills save Tommy.</p><p>Their claim yields a pretty nugget, and George suggests they have it set as a gift for Fou Yei. In a clumsy reference to her past life, he offers it to her as, a two-ounce girl.</p><p>He returns from a hunting trip to find her missing and pursues her to the Joss House where she has come to seek the wisdom of a long dead grandmother. Grandmother advises that George is her man.</p><p>George and Fou Yei visit Tommys emporium to buy provisions and confront Ginger. Ginger insults Fou Yei and George challenges him to a prize fight.</p><p>The fight is a brutal affair that leaves both men badly injured. You Yei takes George back to their claim where news arrives that Ginger has died from injuries sustained in the fight and they flee into the unknown to search for Georges Mountain.</p><p>They find it at a site rich in aboriginal paintings.</p><p>George is interrupted at his work by a vision of an old man and when he returns to load the ore finds three warriors waiting. They kill him and Fou Yei flees and is close to death by the time she returns to their claim.</p><p>She is nursed back to health by Tommy and returns to Cooktown where she gives birth to Georges child before returning to China a rich woman.</p><p><strong>1995</strong></p><p>Following the British handover of Hong Kong to China, the smart money is leaving, much of it with Ophelia Lau, a successful Chinese businesswoman. She engages Public Relations Consultant, Stanley LCosse to negotiate the sponsorship of a school of business at a university.</p><p>Archaeologist Daisy Maycock absents herself from the University on a private expedition to The Palmer Gold Field where she finds the ruin of the joss house and discovers that it was used to smuggle gold to China.</p><p>Ophelias company has plans for the old field. She sees the joss house as an afront and wants it destroyed. She tricks Daisy into believing that she supports her work and sends men to assist in collecting and cataloguing the artefacts from the joss house.</p><p>Daisy is horrified when the men burn the joss house. She escapes with the artefacts to the safety of an abandoned mine.</p><p>Ophelia demands that the University recover and destroy the artefacts and Duncan Fairweather, a partner in the public relations firm is sent to retrieve them. He finds Daisys hiding place and, in a struggle, breaks open a large ceramic pot to reveal the skeleton of a Chinese miner and the gold that was to pay for his return to, and burial in, China.</p><p>Daisy is outraged. She kills Duncan, hides his body in the shaft, loads the artefacts in her Land Rover and leaves. She becomes lost and is killed when her vehicle rolls.</p><p>Her body and the artefacts are discovered and create a media storm.
