Pixel, a cartoon girl with rubber-hose limbs and a glowing green star, wakes after three centuries inside an arcade cabinet labelled SPELLCODE. She escapes into a galaxy where wild magic was Compiled—rewritten into a safe, obedient language owned by AetherLogic—and where anything uncompiled is erased. Her emergence triggers alarms across the network.

Juno Adeyemi-Cross, a bored junior technician with a degree in Obsolete Systems Management, is sent to delete her but instead befriends her. Corvin, a Cleaner ordered to erase Pixel with 'extreme prejudice,' hesitates when she asks why everyone looks so serious, and defects. Pursued by AetherLogic, the trio flees in the Sidebar, an ugly half-sentient ship that sings and refuses to jump unless complimented.

They reach Orin, the last old mage, who reveals he helped build the Compilation, then hid the last wild spell—Pixel—inside a children's game. He also shows them a library of sleeping cabinets, spells that could not be compiled. Meanwhile, AetherLogic's Director of Risk releases a faulty patch that begins breaking systems galaxy-wide, and Protocol Absolute is announced to cleanse all remaining wild magic.

Pixel learns she is destabilising and will unravel, taking everything she has touched with her. Juno discovers that joy and kindness stabilise her, and that the Spellcode's foundations are secretly held up by old, uncompiled jokes—including the pun holding up a collapsing mining moon, where Pixel saves 211 miners by holding the ceiling with her stretched body.

The group launches a 'Bureaucracy Attack': miners and ordinary citizens flood AetherLogic with grievance forms, while Pixel, Juno, and Corvin enter the Nexus. There, Pixel discovers Orin's hidden line, 'HELLO, WORLD,' and realises she is the author as well as the spell. She writes the final condition—'ONLY WHEN SHARED'—and steps into the root, rewriting the permissions so anyone may use magic, provided it is shared.

Protocol Absolute fails when ten billion systems ask for confirmation and people say no. Magic returns gently: kettles sing, doors speak, mountains laugh, and sleeping cabinets awaken across the galaxy. Pixel, now stable and whole, sets out with her friends to find the remaining wild spells and welcome them into the light.
