Strangers see the three of them stopped along a desert highway and think they're looking at bodyguards — a huge bearded man on one side of her, a lean, weathered man smoking on the other. With better eyes, they'd see a woman being followed.

Rebecca 'Becky' Freidmann has run her husband's motorcycle club for thirty years — she just never held the title. She rebuilt its engines, so every man in the club has trusted his life to her hands at eighty miles an hour. She kept its books in a green ledger in handwriting so neat it looks printed. And at a kitchen table at midnight, in pencil, she made the decisions her husband announced each morning. A smart man marries up and shuts up, Marty used to say — and everybody knew who his closest adviser was.

Then Marty's heart quit on a Tuesday in February, somewhere between the kitchen and the garage, and at the funeral every eye turned to Mark 'Bear' Marshal, the lieutenant who stood on his right for thirty years — and who tells this story. For four seconds Bear considered the patch. Then he looked at the widow, dry-eyed by the casket, and understood: take the title, and he'd spend his life walking into her kitchen to ask what to do — governing through a woman in a bathrobe, in reverse. She had spent thirty years refusing to be ruled by a fiction. He wasn't going to build her another one.

But Chuck Turner — twenty-six, made of gristle and certainty — has other plans for the club. It has always run a little marijuana, quiet in, quiet out. Chuck wants the real money: harder product, new territory, and a sit-down with Los Halcones del Cerro Quemado, who move weight up from the south. He says 'new leadership' eleven times. He never quite says the widow isn't up to this. He doesn't have to.

Becky answers the way she has always answered: with arithmetic. At the first meeting after the funeral she opens the green ledger and gives not a speech but a reading — the clubhouse, bought in cash and paid off, its deed proof against any man's divorce or arrest; the lawyers' account that defended two members without a passed hat; the burial fund that buried four of their own, the fourth that very week. 'You've been riding on my arithmetic for thirty years,' she says. 'The only thing that changes is whose name you say it in.'

But a club doesn't run on ledgers. It runs on the road — and the road delivers its verdict forty miles out, in unseasonable heat, when a bike dies in the gravel and the club's best young wrench comes up beaten. What Becky does next, kneeling in the sun with spare line from her own saddlebag, settles the succession in the only language her world trusts. Not with a vote. With a formation.

The fight isn't over. On the road to Sturgis, word reaches the advance party: Chuck's people have arranged a quiet meeting during rally week — a handshake committing thirty riders to a war none of them voted for. Becky rides ahead with Bear on her right and Allen 'Smiley' Marks — the young faction's own elder, a man with an unexplained past across that border — on her left. What happens that night in the back room of the Cordwood Saloon is a confrontation with no fists, no guns, no raised voices — just a ledger, a circled line, and a careful man in a pressed white shirt.
