ASHER

I'm the golden boy. The captain. The son of a hockey legend, with a championship ring, a grin for every camera, and a secret I've kept for eleven years.

Then the goalie I scored the winning goal on gets traded to my team.

He's my new teammate. My road roommate. The one player in the league who looks at me like he can see straight through the grin.

And at the home opener, the kiss cam lands on us.

I kiss him. As a joke. The whole building laughs. The internet ships us by morning.

It isn't a joke.

It's the only true thing I've done in years, and nobody can ever find out.

LUCIEN

I don't do closets. I learned that the hard way, a long time ago, in a city I'll never play in again.

Now I've been traded to a team with a camera in every corridor, and a captain who beat me in overtime of the seventh game and smiled like it cost him nothing.

He's loud. He's beautiful. He's lying to everybody.

Including himself.

I won't be anybody's secret. Not again. Not even his.

So why can't I stop waiting for him?
