BELLA

Seven years ago I fell in love with a boy on a rock by the sea.

My father had him killed. Then he made sure I watched.

I haven't said more than a handful of words since.

Tomorrow I marry the man my father chose for me when I was thirteen. I'll stand at the altar in another woman's dress and say what I'm told to say. I always do.

Then the church doors open.

And the boy I buried walks up the aisle.

He isn't a boy anymore. He's the most feared man in New York, and he's looking at me like I'm the one who put him in the ground.

He takes me from the altar in front of three hundred people. He locks me in a house by the water that he built for a girl he thought was dead.

He wants answers. He wants me to beg.

He wants me to scream, and I've forgotten how.

PIETRO

They told me she died. I stood at her grave every summer for six years and talked to a stone.

Then I walked into a stranger's wedding to ruin her father, and the bride turned her head.

She's alive. She's been alive the whole time. And the last thing she ever sent me was the message that walked me into a bullet.

So I took her.

I'll keep her until she tells me why. Every lie. Every word. In her own voice.

She can hate me. She can fight me. She doesn't get to leave.

Every family in this city wants her back, and the man she was promised to will burn New York to get her.

Let him try. She was mine first.
