St. Alder, Maine. 1932.

Former policeman turned private investigator Tom Brogan expects crooked betting when City Hall asks him to look into a suspicious boxing match. Eddie Royal, a fading heavyweight, has returned to the ring after months away and started winning fights nobody expected him to survive.

Punches that should finish him barely seem to matter. His injuries heal too quickly. And after every fight, his wife Lillian feels that a little less of her husband comes home. Then Tom finds Eddie Royal's death certificate.

With the Mayor's sharp-eyed aide Vivian Hart beside him, Tom follows the paper trail from boxing halls and back-room bookmakers to hospitals, undertakers and a doctor whose work should never have left the laboratory.

Eddie Royal keeps getting up. That's what frightens the man hitting him.

A mystery of boxing, corruption, strange science and the terrible price of refusing to stay down.
