Nell Sowerby has spent twelve years telling herself she stayed for her father.

When Alden Rusk dies in February, the boatyard he ran for fifty-one years does not go to family. It goes to six women, in six equal shares, and it cannot be sold unless every one of them agrees. Nell has never owned anything in her life. Now she owns a sixth of the largest thing in town.

Bo Kittredge is the surveyor Pell Marine sent to put a number on it. He is polite, he is thorough, and he is right — the yard loses money, the travel lift is forty years old, and every fall the harbor hauls its boats ninety minutes up the coast because Alden would not build what the fishermen actually needed.

Nell would find him much easier to dislike if he were wrong.

In the tool room there are six things with six names on them. Five of the women can work out what they did to earn a share. The sixth cannot. And until they all agree, nobody sells anything.
