“He’s always been determined to unearth something to prove that Merlin was real, and Welsh. But he’s disappeared. That’s why I’ve come to you.”

When an old chum of Anwen-by-Wye’s respected publican, Tudor Evans, asks the women of the WISE Enquiries Agency to find a missing fellow metal detectorist, Annie Parker and Carol Hill believe that Carol’s fascination with Welsh mythology will come in handy. But then they dig up some unsettling facts about the obsessed man’s recent activities, and their case develops an urgent pace.

Meanwhile, Christine Wilson-Smythe is commissioned by the duke and duchess of Chellingworth to go to Brighton with her fiancé Alexander, to track down a charismatic antiques dealer whose amorous activities have directly impacted the smooth running of Chellingworth Hall itself. Which leaves Mavis MacDonald trying to locate the missing member of a pop group that disbanded over forty years ago, and finding she has her hands full when the dowager Althea decides to “help”.

Will the detectorist who’s determined to prove that Merlin and his magic were real, be found? Will Christine and Alexander be able to restore the normal order of things at Chellingworth Hall? And will the band ever get back together again? It’s May in the picturesque Welsh village of Anwen-by-Wye, but all four women of the WISE Enquiries Agency find themselves having to work away from their beloved homes, and they each have missing people on their minds.
