She climbed every rung. He owns the building. Neither of them can look away.

Nora Cassidy left a gravel road in Linden Creek and built a life the only way she knew how: early mornings, late inventories, and a stubborn refusal to let a dollar go uncounted. Seven years after she started in Hawthorne’s stockroom, she runs the store’s busiest floor—the marble, the perfume, the handbags that keep the lights on. Then the February figures land on her desk. The numbers don’t add up. The notation in the ledger is small, circled, and signed with initials that belong to the man upstairs.

Elias Hawthorne inherited more than a name. He inherited a living building, a board that measures loyalty in margins, and a family rule: protect the store, protect the silence, never confuse interest in you with interest in what you own. He walks the floors before dawn the way his grandmother once did. He does not sleep well. He cannot stop thinking about the woman who dropped a clipboard in a stalled elevator, looked at him as if the job and the person were two different things, and waited for him to speak.

He said nothing.

Now they pass in corridors. They nod. They take the long way. The building keeps putting them in the same small spaces, and a quiet pattern in the accounts keeps pulling them closer to a secret the Hawthornes have been carrying for years. She wants the truth. He wants to see what she will do with it. Neither of them planned on wanting the other.

Opposites don’t just attract here. They collide—country honesty against city armor, a woman who earned her blazer against a man who was handed the skyline—and the store itself becomes the third character: old marble, hidden ledgers, and a past that will not stay in the sub-basement.

When the discrepancy becomes a crisis, Nora’s signature is on the paperwork and Elias has to choose between the family name and the only person who ever asked him to be more than the suit. Trust is the real currency. Neither of them has spent it the way the other needs.

The Department Store Affair is a slow-burn workplace romance with a mystery in the books—two people who keep saying never, a building that won’t let them, and a love that has to be rebuilt one honest page at a time.
