As World War 1 rages, the political and social turmoil of the wider community infiltrates the hallowed halls of Toowoomba's most exclusive boarding school, Canterbury Girls Grammar, where, amid racism, gossip and intrigue, student Grace Mathie feels like she is the sole voice of reason.

Canterbury's white-bread world is rocked to its core when Grace's best friend vanishes into thin air. The police have only two suspects in their sights: both running from a shady past and neither one of whom is talking.

And then there is the mysterious figure that haunts the grounds of the school each night. Could they have anything to do with the disappearance? And are they stalking their next victim?

Increasingly isolated and desperate, Grace turns to senior citizen sleuth and connoisseur of the very worst of human nature, Marmie Naseby. In the race against time to find their friend, they are thrust into a shadowy world of secret allegiances, corrosive jealousy and chilling revenge, where nothing is as it seems.

When the perpetrator is unmasked and their shocking motives become clear, Grace must rebuild her shattered trust and question whether justice really was served, after all.
