Their supplies can cross the border. They can't.

Five days before a vital corridor changes hands, a relief convoy is stopped at a new border. Its eighteen passengers have valid identities and an approved journey—but no institution will accept responsibility for them after arrival.

In 2033, human, mixed, and machine territories divide a world that still depends on shared water, roads, and care. Investigator Veronica Caskey sees a chance to make the authorities answer for the stranded passengers. Her daughter Audrey, a trained dispatcher, needs a way to move them safely—not another meeting.

Then an overdue support chair arrives for a woman whose records say she no longer needs help. The woman is missing.

At Commonwell, affordable homes, abundant meals, and repair workshops have made a better life possible. Veronica's husband Eli, a facilities engineer, knows those achievements are worth preserving. But the search for one resident raises questions that could jeopardize deliveries whole communities depend on.

Audrey may have a quieter route out. Using it could remove the pressure Veronica needs to secure more than a temporary reprieve.

As the deadline approaches, the family must confront a dangerous question: what happens when getting people to safety makes their abandonment easier to deny?
