Though the once-powerful tribe has fractured into desperate bands, the worshippers of Goddess Earth fight to drive them back to the steppes. And to Marrah's dismay, her son Keru has been taken captive by an enemy diviner.

But once Marrah's daughter and niece come of age, they take matters into their own hands by training to join the Snakes, the most famous band of warriors the Motherland has ever known. Their mystical bond will save them from the dangers of the forests, the seas, and the men who stalk the land. Until they come face to face with Shangar, the evil being who has stolen Keru's soul . . .
