Every coin in your pocket is a promise. This book tells the story of who first made that promise — and how many times it was broken.

Long before coins existed, people paid with shells, silver fragments weighed on a balance, cattle, grain, and wooden sticks notched to remember a debt. Then, in a river valley in Lydia, someone stamped a lump of gold-silver alloy with a lion's head and changed the world: for the first time, a stranger's money could be trusted at sight.

In forty chapters — one coin, currency, mint, hoard or money idea in each — The First Coins follows money's first twenty-five centuries across the whole world: the owls of Athens and the darics of Persia, India's punch-marked silver and China's spade, knife and square-holed cash coins, Rome's denarius and its slow debasement into worthlessness, Byzantium's golden solidus, the dirhams that reached Viking hoards, Florence's florin and Venice's never-changing ducat, the clippers and counterfeiters who risked the gallows, and the Song-dynasty merchants whose paper notes became the world's first government paper money.

Inside you'll discover
nWhy cowrie shells became the first world money — and outlasted most empires
nHow Croesus of Lydia split electrum into the first pure gold and silver coinage
nHow Rome's debasement unfolded, coin by coin, until the money fell apart
nWhy Chinese cash coins kept their square holes for some two thousand years
nWhat buried hoards — Cuerdale, Hoxne and others — tell us that texts cannot
nHow Florence and Venice built fortunes on coins that never cheated
nWhy paper money triumphed in Song China, collapsed under the Mongols and Ming, and returned in Stockholm and London

Who this book is for
nCoin collectors who want the human story behind the tray, history readers who love one-object-at-a-time storytelling, and anyone who has ever wondered why a stamped disc or a printed note can be worth dinner.

Henry Marchant writes narrative history of everyday things — the objects people handled daily and the systems those objects quietly built.

Pick up a coin. You are holding the end of a very long story. This is how it began.
