Behind the scientific question lies a human one: what place will humanity have when the intelligence it creates comes to understand more than its creators? Can human life, freedom, and individual choice retain their value alongside a mind more capable than our own?

The Great Filter is a science fiction story by Boris Liberman about three generations, the search for other civilizations, and the possible transition from biological to artificial intelligence.
