HER FIANCÉ PAID TO HAVE HER MURDERED BEFORE THE WEDDING.

THE HIGHLANDER WHO CAPTURED HER WAS SUPPOSED TO BE HER ENEMY.

NOW HE'S THE ONLY MAN STANDING BETWEEN HER AND THE MEN WHO WANT HER DEAD.

My name is Philippa Thornleigh.

The night I found my entire escort dead beside an overturned cart, I knew there would be no wedding.

Someone wanted me dead before I ever reached Lennach.

And I knew why.

Four nights earlier, I had read a letter I was never meant to see.

A letter from my cousin Hugh.

It spelled out my fate.

I was to die on the road.

The Carrachs would take the blame.

My death would give Lennach the excuse to start a war.

And my betrothed, Domhnall Lennach, would keep my dowry.

What I didn't know was that the man I'd find among the bodies hadn't come to rescue me.

He'd come to take me.

Ruairidh Carrach.

Laird of the enemy clan.

The man I'd been taught to fear.

The man who needed to trade me for his younger brother, Eòghann, a prisoner in Domhnall's hands.

When he finds me, I drive a dagger into his arm.

He disarms me.

And then the first arrow flies.

It buries itself exactly where my heart had been.

The next one isn't meant for him, either.

Ruairidh throws me into the mud and covers me with his body.

And in that instant, I understand something terrible:

THE MEN WHO CLAIM THEY'VE COME TO SAVE ME ARE THE SAME MEN TRYING TO KILL ME.

Ruairidh takes me to Dùn Carrach.

I am his hostage.

He needs his brother back.

I need to stay alive.

And neither of us can afford to trust the other.

But captivity has a way of rewriting the rules.

Because behind the Laird everyone calls a savage, I discover a man who protects his own.

A man who keeps his promises.

A man who would rather lose his bargaining advantage than let an innocent woman pay for his war.

And as we struggle to survive Domhnall's deadly game, something happens that neither of us expected.

I START TO TRUST MY CAPTOR.

Then, to want him.

And finally, to fear something far worse than death:

THE DAY HE SETS ME FREE.

Because Ruairidh has promised me a horse, an escort, and safe passage to the English border.

He has promised that I will return home.

And he intends to keep his word.

Even if it means losing me.

Even if he loves me.

Even if I love him, too.

But when the time comes to leave, I discover that freedom is not always as simple as crossing a border.

For the first time in my life, no father, no cousin, no betrothed, and no Highland laird will decide my future.

I will.

And I must choose between the life I was promised…

…and the man who gave me back the right to choose.

A bride marked for death.
A Highland laird who will risk everything to rescue his brother.
A hostage who discovers her enemy may be her only ally.
A treacherous conspiracy that could ignite a war.
And a love that can only survive if she is free to choose it.
