The City of London is far more than a global financial centre. Within the historic Square Mile lies a civic institution whose roots extend to Roman Londinium and whose distinctive governance has endured through conquest, catastrophe and constitutional change.

The History of the City of London: Two Thousand Years of Institutional Evolution traces the remarkable development of this unique jurisdiction, examining how its civic institutions preserved their identity while adapting to the changing demands of British history.

From the Norman Conquest and the Charter of 1067 to the rise of the Livery Companies, the Great Plague, the Great Fire and the financial revolution, Alexander Hartwell explores the events and institutions that shaped the City’s enduring character.

Inside, discover:

The Roman foundations of Londinium and its early commercial development.

The evolution of civic liberties, royal charters and municipal governance.

The influence of medieval guilds and the Livery Companies.

The impact of plague, fire and rebuilding on the City’s development.

The emergence of the Bank of England, insurance markets and modern finance.

The City’s changing role through twentieth-century upheaval and into the modern era.

Drawing on historical records, charters and established scholarship, this book examines the relationship between tradition, commercial power and institutional adaptation.

Whether you are interested in British history, constitutional development, urban institutions or the origins of modern finance, this volume offers an accessible account of how the City of London became one of Britain’s most distinctive and enduring civic institutions.
