Rebecca Hale remembers two children. The records say they never existed.

When memory forensic investigator Dr. Mara Quinn takes the case, she finds a house with a room that cannot be there, a family photograph that exists in three impossible versions, and a husband who begins to remember the daughter he never had. The Memory Engine that nearly rewrote history has been silent for months. Whatever is happening now is being done by human hands.

Mara and Daniel Ortiz follow the evidence into a hidden Market where memories are traded, whole identities are sold, and ordinary people carry other people's lives. Every clue points to a number Mara knows too well, MQ-18, and to a woman who has Mara's scar and a past she cannot explain.

As the Market's secrets unravel, Mara learns the thief is not simply taking memories. Someone is building a person from the pieces, a new identity assembled from many lives, and has been waiting for Mara to find her. Facing a conspiracy that stretches from Orpheus to the Keepers, Mara must ask the question that no investigator can answer with evidence alone: what makes a person who they are?

The Memory Thief is the second book in the Memory Series, a science-fiction mystery about memory, identity, and the choices that make us real. Start with The Memory Market to see how it began.
