Setting: Florence, Tuscany, Italy, with significant events in Calenzano, Arezzo, Fiesole, and Sesto Fiorentino.

Period: 1930s, during Fascist Italy.

In the elegant yet politically oppressive atmosphere of 1930s Florence, Duke Alberto Balsamo, an internationally acclaimed orchestra conductor, and his wife, Duchess Ambra Balsamo, a celebrated French-born actress, lead an extraordinary existence among the city's aristocratic elite. Wealthy, unconventional, intellectually brilliant, and secretly opposed to Fascism, the couple shares an insatiable appetite for adventure, danger, and unconventional pleasures.

Their seemingly carefree existence takes an unexpected turn when Chief Commissioner Giovanni Boccomini confides in Ambra about a peculiar series of crimes. Someone has been systematically stealing and destroying plaster busts depicting the famous actress Isa Miranda. Although the objects possess little monetary value, the intruder's determination and the deliberate selection of particular reproductions suggest something far more sinister than ordinary vandalism.

Intrigued by the strange pattern, Ambra begins an unofficial investigation, relying on her remarkable powers of observation and deduction. Her suspicions deepen when an unidentified man is discovered brutally murdered outside a journalist's residence in Florence's Oltrarno district, following another mysterious disappearance of a statuette.

While Commissioner Boccomini pursues conventional criminal theories, Ambra and Alberto follow a different trail, questioning art dealers, examining commercial records, and investigating the origins of the sculptures. Their inquiries lead them from Florence's bustling streets to an artisan workshop in Arezzo, where an enigmatic former employee emerges as a potentially crucial figure.

As the investigation progresses, seemingly insignificant details acquire unexpected importance. A suspicious photograph, an unusual manufacturing history, and the calculated movements of an elusive criminal gradually suggest that the shattered statuettes conceal a secret worth killing for.

The discovery of connections to German intelligence introduces a dangerous international dimension, placing the investigation against the ominous background of Fascist and Nazi ambitions. What began as an eccentric local mystery threatens to expose a clandestine struggle involving espionage, military research, and secrets of extraordinary strategic importance.

With danger mounting and time running short, Ambra devises a daring plan involving a secluded villa in Sesto Fiorentino. Accompanied by Alberto and Commissioner Boccomini, she prepares to confront an adversary whose desperation makes him increasingly unpredictable.

Combining aristocratic glamour, romantic passion, brilliant deduction, and international intrigue, this historical thriller follows two extraordinary investigators through a mystery in which even the most fragile object may conceal consequences far beyond its apparent significance.
