What is truly new about the New Covenant? For Sigurd Bratlie, the answer goes beyond the forgiveness of past sins. The New Covenant opens the possibility of a fundamentally transformed life in which the will of God is no longer merely an external command, but is written on the heart and mind.

From this starting point, Bratlie examines another striking New Testament expression: the 'mystery of lawlessness.' What happens when faith in Christ becomes separated from obedience, sanctification, and an actual transformation of life? The book develops a sharp contrast between the work God intends to accomplish in a person through the New Covenant and a form of religion that confesses Christ while resisting His rule.

Bratlie draws together central New Testament themes concerning law and grace, sin and salvation, faith and obedience. Again and again, the focus returns to the practical consequence of the gospel: not only what Christ has done for a person, but what His life and power can accomplish within the believer.

'If you have committed yourself to obey all the will of God, then the Lord commits Himself to clothe you with power from on high, to equip you with everything that pertains to life and godliness, to write His laws in your heart and mind, and to bless you with all spiritual blessings;'

The New Covenant and the Mystery of Lawlessness is a focused examination of the biblical New Covenant and of the question of what genuine Christian life is meant to become.
