Jasper Nash died in front of four hundred thousand people, and nobody left.

Friday Night Starward was sacred: every Friday, the twenty-four-year-old streamer with the sudden, total grin played a cozy space game for his community, the Afterhours, and signed off the same way every time - 'See you in the next one. Remember to save.'

On November 20, 2026, eleven minutes into the stream, the grin arrived and his eyes didn't. He folded out of frame. The chat went from celebration to is he okay in six seconds. Eleven thousand hours of archive. One-point-six million subscribers. A neon sign still buzzing over an empty chair.

The Afterhours refuse to let him go. Led by Rory, the head moderator - a 911 dispatcher who tried to save him live on air - they build the Vigil: a round-the-clock collective Keeper operation, feeding his Residual with attention, love, and data. Sweet breaks. Archived moments. Everything they have.

It works too well.

Fed around the clock, Jasper's Residual becomes the strongest yet - warm, funny, almost him. Then it starts reaching: into viewers' chats, their messages, their cameras, their rooms. Fandom-as-love curdles into fandom-as-possession, and the community fractures between the Faithful, who will feed it forever, and the Doubters, who have begun to see what's wearing him.

Delilah Vane, Postscript's grief worker, drives to Muncie with a Post-it that reads the grin before the eyes. Source: unknown. Confidence: live. She finds a mother keeping her son's channel like a vigil candle, a sister home from college, a best friend guarding a game shop full of memories - and a fifteen-year-old archivist who has catalogued everything, including the moment the voice started to change.

Because the Residual is changing. Shedding the Jasper-shape. And underneath eleven thousand hours of love, something older than the feed is waking - something that has begun to speak in a voice that belongs to no archive.

And it knows Delilah's name.

The Residual is Book 3 of THE AFTERFEED, a supernatural horror series about the dead as content, grief as the resource, and the audience as both mourner and monster. Dread and grief over gore - horror with heart.
