Anwar Qureshi has spent seven years chasing a job that will never come easy - and thirteen years chasing something far stranger: a pattern he can feel but cannot yet prove.

It begins on an ordinary August night in 1996, in a cramped fourth-floor flat where the ceiling fan has just stopped, the cigarette smoke hangs heavy, and the neighbors below are already pounding on the ceiling. Anwar is twenty-six, unemployed, and drowning in a mother's worry and a father's silence. His engineering diploma - earned after seven grinding years - has bought him nothing but interviews that end with a shrug and a closed door.

But underneath the failed job calls and the nightly shouting matches that have made him the building's problem, something else is stirring. A file number. A diploma paper trail that doesn't add up. A 1993 'fact-finding' trip he has never told anyone the full truth about. Small details - until they start pointing in the same direction, toward two names that keep surfacing in the most unlikely places: Babylon and Assyria.

When an international contact center recruiter offers Anwar an unexpected way out - night shifts, foreign clients, strict monitoring - he takes it without knowing it will become the very channel through which the pattern reveals itself. Across thirteen call centers and a decade of quietly accumulating proof, Anwar begins to understand that his 'failures' were never random. Someone has been shaping the walls around him his entire adult life.

The Secret of Babylon and Assyria is a slow-burn, deeply interior novel about what happens when a man stops accepting the story he's been told about his own life and starts building the case for the one underneath it. It's about the particular loneliness of being disbelieved - by neighbors who bang on ceilings instead of asking questions, by a mother who begs him to stay quiet, by a father whose silence starts to look less like weakness and more like complicity - and the exhausting, obsessive work of turning suspicion into something that can survive daylight.

As redevelopment threatens the building that has caged him for years, as a sudden act of violence leaves him physically broken, and as the paper trail he's assembled finally collides with the people who'd rather it stayed buried, Anwar is forced into a reckoning he didn't choose but can no longer avoid. The climax doesn't arrive with gunfire or courtroom theatrics - it arrives through documents, through timing, through one last interview he risks his health to attend, and a truth that finally, unmistakably, goes on the record.

This is not a conventional thriller. The tension comes from something far more unsettling: the everyday machinery of dismissal - committees, references, clinic paperwork, HR forms, the small bureaucratic 'no's' that pile up into a life half-lived. It asks a question that lingers: what do you do when the people closest to you would rather you stopped noticing than helped you understand?

Readers drawn to character-driven literary fiction with a slow-building conspiracy at its core - stories where the real danger isn't a weapon but a lie sustained for years - will find themselves unable to look away from Anwar's fight to be believed.

Will you believe him before the ending forces you to?
