Vienna, 1938. The city cheers. A family begins to disappear — politely, on paper, one form at a time.

Hanna Feld is a luthier's daughter in Leopoldstadt, raised among glue pots and varnish and the certainty that a well-made instrument outlasts the hand that made it. Then the Anschluss arrives, and a mild, well-mannered official named Josef Brenner comes to the workshop with a leather portfolio and a kind voice, and signs the Feld family's trade away between appointments.

Her father's answer is a ledger. Against a regime that steals by leaving things off the lists, he keeps a truer book — every instrument, its real worth beside the thief's price, the gap between them where the crime lives. When the book becomes the one weapon that can undo Brenner, Hanna is drawn into a forgery network, into a dangerous alliance with a clerk who processes the thefts and is quietly trying to keep the records honest, and at last into the camps — carrying, through all of it, the account that insists the stolen people were here.

Spanning Vienna, a refugee orchestra in wartime Manchester, the quarry at Mauthausen, and a postwar tribunal, The Violin Maker's Ledger is a novel about records and resistance, complicity and witness, and the two kinds of survival — to come through, and to come through carrying something. It asks what it means to keep an honest account of a human being: the harm and the courage both, in the same hand, refusing to be reduced to one.
