Setting: Florence, Italy, during the Fascist era, in November of the 1930s. Principal locations include: Via Ghibellina, Palazzo Bandini, Palazzo degli Angeli and Villa Peregallo in Calenzano.

In the rain-soaked streets of 1930s Florence, where aristocratic elegance conceals political oppression, forbidden desires and dangerous secrets, Duke Alberto Balsamo and his wife, Duchess Ambra, become entangled in a mysterious death that challenges everything they believe about perception and truth.

Brilliant, wealthy and unconventional, the Balsamos inhabit a world of luxurious receptions, sensual pleasures and sophisticated intrigue. Alberto, an internationally celebrated conductor, possesses a sharp analytical mind, while Ambra, a captivating French actress, combines extraordinary intuition with an exceptional talent for observing human behavior. Their passionate marriage, unconventional sexual freedom and discreet opposition to Fascism distinguish them from the society surrounding them.

One rainy November night, Ambra notices a taxi stopping outside a neighboring mansion believed to be deserted. A man and a woman enter the building, but something about their movements troubles her. An almost imperceptible discontinuity suggests that the apparently ordinary scene conceals something she cannot identify.

The following morning, a young woman is discovered dead inside the mansion. Her body's unnatural position, the absence of signs of struggle and several inexplicable details raise disturbing questions. What initially appears to be a straightforward tragedy gradually reveals the characteristics of a carefully constructed deception.

Police Inspector Sergio Battiato takes charge of the investigation, but the authorities demand a swift resolution that will protect public order and powerful reputations. Meanwhile, the Balsamos conduct their own inquiry, uncovering tensions within the influential Bandini family, contradictory testimonies and secrets that threaten to destroy carefully maintained appearances.

As Ambra investigates, her sensuality and psychological insight become powerful instruments in a dangerous game involving attraction, manipulation and concealed motives. Her encounters with Battiato further complicate the boundaries between personal desire and professional duty, while Alberto remains her intellectually formidable and intimately understanding partner.

Every gesture, misplaced object and unexplained silence acquires significance. Yet the deeper the couple investigates, the less reliable appearances become. In a society where political power determines which truths may be spoken, discovering what really happened could prove more dangerous than the crime itself.

Combining sophisticated detective fiction, psychological tension, explicit eroticism and historical intrigue, The Weight of Invisible Things explores the unsettling distance between observation and reality, revealing how easily certainty can become the most seductive form of deception.
