Mimi Norouzi has never once heard no and let it stand. She flies out of Tibet, lands in Scotland, and takes a rental car up a mountain road in an arctic blast because a charity board needs her signature in blue ink before New Year's, and because she wants her father to see that she can run more than a charity. She loses the road and goes over a cliff.

Banner Kellison digs her out of the snowbank. He cooked in France, spent three years in Italy, earned two Michelin stars, then buried his wife and buried himself in a cottage far from anyone. The second Mimi opens her eyes he hears the bell his father and grandfather warned him about, the one that tells a Kellison man he has found his soul mate. He phones the duke down the valley and asks him to take her away.

Nobody can reach the mountain. The power dies. Banner cooks for her over an open flame, Mimi learns to keep a fire alive, and the storm of the century gives them one night with no audience and nothing to prove.

Then the snow melts, a helicopter lands in his field, and Banner tells her to get on it because leaving is best for her.
