Centuries ago, the mages of Kadral used now-forgotten scripts to battle mythical monsters from a world called the Disorder. Tephen, a 21-year-old student mage living in an era of longstanding peace, has no interest in battle. Instead, his main interests, aside from reconstructing the fragmented remains of the ancient scripts, are graduating, finding a job, and taking a woman on a date without becoming completely tongue-tied.

But as shadowy creatures begin attacking Kadral, Tephen knows he cant just stand by and watch. As he joins in the fight, it becomes clear that without the knowledge of the ancient mages, the kingdom of Kadral will fall. Desperate to restore what was lost and save his people, Tephen discovers unlikely allies in a mysterious shopkeeper with an unaccountable understanding of ancient scripts, and his apprentice, a young woman with an unexpected connection to Tephens past. If they are to have any hope of winning, they must use the ancient scripts to invent new solutions, some of which will force Tephen to question long-held theories about their worlds magic. When the fate of their nation hangs in the balance, will they be ready?
